ATOMS is the branding given to the services being delivered from the Northcote Traffic Management Centre to manage the Auckland Regional road network, located in the Motorways Police Building just north of the Auckland Harbour Bridge. ATOMS monitors and manages traffic 24 hours a day, 7 days a week through the use of advanced technologies and systems.

Any event which causes a temporary reduction in road capacity or an abnormal increase in traffic demand that is not a normal occurrence at that time.
Traffic incidents may affect 1 or more lanes on
a roadway. The diagram below explains the terminology used in

ATOMS supports on-road special events while minimising disruptions to road users.
A system which optimises the flow of traffic along a roadway by increasing the number of lanes available in the direction which carries more traffic. The best known example is the Auckland Harbour Bridge, which adjusts the direction of travel of its 8 lanes according to traffic demand.
Variable Message Signs (VMS) are in use in the Auckland Region. Their primary function is to display information about current incidents in the immediate area.
