ATOMS

ATOMS is the branding given to the services being delivered from the Northcote Traffic Management Centre to manage the Auckland Regional road network, located in the Motorways Police Building just north of the Auckland Harbour Bridge. ATOMS monitors and manages traffic 24 hours a day, 7 days a week through the use of advanced technologies and systems.

CCTV

Closed Circuit Television. The Northcote Traffic Management Centre uses a network of over 120 CCTV cameras to monitor traffic incidents.

Incident

Any event which causes a temporary reduction in road capacity or an abnormal increase in traffic demand that is not a normal occurrence at that time.

Lane Terminology

Traffic incidents may affect 1 or more lanes on a roadway. The diagram below explains the terminology used in identifying lanes affected by traffic incidents. Diagram showing relative positions of Shoulder/Kerbside, Centre, and Median lanes.

Special Event

ATOMS supports on-road special events while minimising disruptions to road users.

Tidal Flow

A system which optimises the flow of traffic along a roadway by increasing the number of lanes available in the direction which carries more traffic. The best known example is the Auckland Harbour Bridge, which adjusts the direction of travel of its 8 lanes according to traffic demand.

VMS

Variable Message Signs (VMS) are in use in the Auckland Region. Their primary function is to display information about current incidents in the immediate area.
