ATOMS operates 24hr x 365 days with access to dynamic traffic information through the Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS) and the Auckland Region traffic signals system (SCATS).
Operators constantly monitor automatic systems and live video feeds, to assist in clearing traffic incidents effectively and keeping motorists informed. This is achieved through working closely with partner organisations, Police and emergency services along with using vehicle-detection technology, cameras and communications links with contractors.
By working with partner organisations, the latest technology and dedicated centres like ATOMS, the NZ Transport Agency aims to improve traffic flow and consequently the region's economic and social development.

The web cameras are in place to obtain images solely for the purpose of traffic information and management. The cameras film the traffic on the motorways, however, NZTA's policy is to NOT retain the web camera images. The web cameras are fixed to focus only on the motorways (and not neighbouring properties), are low definition and are not capable of zooming.
